There are times when we have to have surgery and we really don’t want to feel the pain. We want to be numb. We want to feel as little discomfort as possible. So we are given heavy medications to either put us asleep or make us numb to the pain. We have to be careful about wanting to be numb all through life and avoiding pain. When we try to avoid pain and discomfort in life we are going to discover that we aren’t really doing anything at all. We are simply taking up space.

Life has ways of throwing pain our way. We can’t avoid it. We can’t permanently numb it. We can try but we are really only hurting ourselves and others in the process. The best way to deal with pain is to seek the One who can give us peace. We could ask a dozen people who they believe is the greatest Healer and we would possibly get 12 different answers. Some of which would be ways we could find peace within ourselves. Really? There is peace within me apart from God? I don’t think so.

The only true peace we can have that will give us all we need is peace from God. He will not always take away our pain away and numb us from feeling anything. If He did that, how could we ever appreciate the good things in life? God allows our suffering so we can help others. He allows us to have pain so we can share with others. He allows us to have situations to deal with so we can go to Him for peace and comfort. He wants to help and heal us. And He wants us to share what He does for us with others.

Knowing the reason behind the pain and suffering makes it much easier to deal with. God wants us to have joy in all things. In order to do that, we have to be joyful even in the bad times knowing He has an ultimate plan for us. That requires trust and faith. Trust and faith come from knowing God and knowing His word.

So in order to keep pain away and minimize suffering, we need to know God. Knowing God doesn’t mean bad things won’t happen to us but it does mean we will know what to do when hard times come. And that’s what we need to do as well as share it with others.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (NLT)
